Geo Barcan uses a modified 35mm camera to capture memories of home in a seaside town in her haunting short film Always Come Back To The Sea. Actress Val Sanders revisits key moments of her early life, from her father's piano recitals to her spotlight-stealing younger brother, while still images highlight the merging of memory and imagination.
This poetic experimental film was created based on Val Sander’s life-long memories which were recorded in long sessions over one year. Looking into how memories become distorted over time, with each recollention, this work contemplates childhood trauma, family ties and the bound we form with places.
The sea is the central metaphor as a site of becoming, where memory is stored, distilled and reconstructed: a constant flow, between back and forth, back and forth.
